How to Integrate Outlook with Dynamics 365 version 9 by Steve Jones

Are you having issues with the Dynamics 365 app for Outlook on Version 9 of Dynamics 365 for Sales? With Dynamics 365, Microsoft offers two integration tools for Outlook:

  1. Dynamics 365 app for Outlook (app)
  2. Dynamics 365 for Outlook (add-in)

Dynamics 365 app for Outlook was originally slated as the successor of the Dynamics 365 for Outlook add-in and became the de facto way to integrate with Outlook when Dynamics 365 launched in 2016. But in January, Microsoft announced that they were reversing their decision to retire the plugin and will be supporting and improving it moving forward.

Now what does this have to do with version 9 of Dynamics 365 for Sales? With the latest release of Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement Plan, the Dynamics 365 app for Outlook went back into preview as it is being given new functionality and it is not recommended that it be deployed in live environments*. The Dynamics 365 for Outlook add-in is today the supported integration tool for Dynamics 365 and Outlook.

For those late to the party, here are a few quick differences between the two:

  1. Dynamics 365 app for Outlook (app)
    • The app is web-based and can be deployed to devices via the Dynamics 365 interface
    • The app loads faster and has a better visual design
  2. Dynamics 365 for Outlook (add-in)
    • The add-in must be manually installed on a device
    • The add-in has more features
